Bonding & Trust Workshop

Bonding & Trust Workshop

We all love our dogs deeply, but we all also want to build our dogs' trust in us throughout their whole lives. We want our dogs to understand that we are trustworthy, kind, and always ready to reward them for following our lead. As we build up our bonds with our dogs, our connection increases, our dogs' behavior becomes more reliable and prompt, and our dogs become more willing to try new things with us.

This seminar-style workshop focuses on these major areas:

  • teaching the humans how to observe canine behavior and communication so they can respond to their dogs' feelings and needs effectively
  • helping the humans develop a wide variety of ways to reward their dogs so they can motivate and encourage them effectively
  • teaching the dogs that all humans are reliable, trustworthy, fair, and fun
  • teaching the dogs that they can trust their humans when they're asked to try something new
  • giving the handler-dog team a repertoire of games and exercises that they can play together so the people learn how to be more fun and the dogs learn how to be more consistent

This workshop is ideal for teams looking to take their work to the next level, whether that's in a sport, in therapy dog work, or in terms of getting more coordinated together in the house, the park, or family gatherings.

$55.00
This two-hour workshop can be taken individually or in conjunction with the Loose Leash Workshop the same day. Take both for $100 and save $10!
Prerequisites:  Puppy Kindergarten or Basic Class

Loose Leash Workshop

Are daily walks a bit stressful instead of a relaxing time to bond with your dog? Do you wish you could take your dog more places, but once you start walking, you lose your connection? This workshop will, perhaps surprisingly, focus on not using the leash so much. Instead, it will focus on teaching your dog where to be and how to stay connected to you, whether he's literally hooked in or not.

This workshop will cover the principles and methods of:

  • encouraging a dog to stay connected around distractions
  • employing a wide variety of rewards and using them effectively
  • responding to situations in which your dog is pulling
  • planning outings to set your team up for success
  • avoiding common problems and pitfalls
  • using the leash as a safety and management tool and not as a way to communicate or punish

Our instructors will also give you clear feedback on what they see as your team's individual strengths and issues so you can take what you've learned and continue improve on your walks and other outings over time.

So Now You're a Therapy Team Workshops

Are you a recently registered therapy team? Or have you been registered for a while, but you would like prepare for new kinds of therapy visits that may pose particular challenges and stressors for you and your dog? Or are you looking to prepare for a new visit location or style and you want to bolster your confidence? Then join us for one or both of these seminar-style workshops focused on preparing for therapy dog visits in challenging but meaningful locations.

Your instructors for these workshops are Certified Professional Dog Trainers and experienced therapy dog handlers. We have developed real-world scenarios drawn from long-term experience making therapy visits in a wide variety of environments. We'll role-play through elements of these scenarios, just like the Pet Partners evaluation does.

Come learn all of the things that we never anticipated when we started making real-world therapy visits. We will discuss and practice some of the weirdest, least expected, and most stressful things that have happened to our visiting teams, all tailored to participants' skill level and future plans.

While these workshops are aimed at teams who have already passed the Pet Partners or TDI evaluation, they would also be appropriate for teams who have taken the Skills Practice Scenarios class and are looking for more training and practice before the evaluation. We also welcome teams preparing for recertification or looking to move from the "predictable" to the "complex" rating. As the scenarios will generally be more challenging than those in the Skills Practice Scenarios class, this workshop would not be appropriate for handlers and dogs who are early in their journey toward becoming a therapy team.

Medical Environments Workshop, 10AM-12PM

Discussion, scenarios, roleplaying, and practice of skills relevant to nursing homes, hospices, and hospitals, like positioning your dog for patients confined to beds, navigating tight spaces and medical equipment, conversing with patients with altered mental states, and being your dog's advocate while still prioritizing a patient's needs, when and when not to use food rewards, among others.

Educational Environments Workshop, 12:30PM-2:30PM

Discussion, scenarios, roleplaying, and practice of skills relevant to schools, colleges, libraries, and reading programs, like navigating tight spaces, handling a crowd, helping children learn to interact appropriately with your dog, helping your dog be patient while a child reads, staying calm while in close proximity to other therapy dogs, when and when not to use food rewards, among others.

$55.00/each two hour workshop
These workshops can be taken individually or together. Take both for $100 and save $10!

Puppy Up! 2016 Walk

  • Guilford Fair Grounds

Paws 'N Effect is a sponsor for the upcoming PuppyUp walk that will be held at the Guilford Fair Grounds on Sunday, October 30, with a festival starting at 11AM and 2-mile walk at 1PM.

Did you know that between 4 and 6 million dogs die from cancer every year? And 38 children in the US alone are diagnosed with this disease every day. By funding comparative oncology research, these alarming statistics can be reduced to the benefit of both dogs and humans. Let’s join together to walk and fundraise for the PuppyUp Walk.

At the walk, we will be offering Canine Good Citizen evaluations and a fun obstacle course for a small donation!

We would love to have you join the Paws 'N Effect Cares team. All are welcome. When it comes to our PuppyUp Walk team, the more the merrier!

It’s easy to join. Go to this link, click "Join Team" and follow the prompts to register.

If you cannot join our team and walk on October 30th, please consider making a donation in memory or in celebration of a special dog.
